Tribu Sole Initiative Upcycled Footwear Launched

Tribu, a footwear brand, has just added new picks to its product line with the launch of Tribu Sole Initiative Upcycled Footwear, which was launched on April 17, 2012 at Casa Nami Surf Pub & Grill in Makati City.

Upcycling is the process of transforming or re-purposing discarded or waste materials, without downgrading or destructing their composition, into new products of enhanced quality or higher environmental value.

Wikipedia describes Tire recycling or rubber recycling as:
the process of recycling vehicles' tires that are no longer suitable for use on vehicles due to wear or irreparable damage (such as punctures). These tires are among the largest and most problematic sources of waste, due to the large volume produced and their durability.

In the Philippines, it is reported that trash rubber tires is now over 7 million filling up landfills, dump sites and backyards. I'm sure this goes the same for most countries across the globe. It poses a huge problem since rubber tires never decompose yet are highly flammable creating significant environmental and health risks.

Burning tires emit toxic chemicals and air pollutants which can cause cardiac and respiratory diseases, while stockpiled rubber tires become breeding sites for mosquitoes and other disease-carrying animals.

Have you really thought about how to minimize trash rubber tires and still help the environment? There are some who transform used tires in basketball courts, gardens, public playgrounds and shoe products. But the fact remains: a huge pile of used tires are still left untouched and abandoned.

There are just a few waste tire monofill in the country. "Monofill" is described as a long-term temporary storage facility for scrap tires until an economically viable re-use or end market can be developed and sustained for the processed shreds. Since Tribu has been actively supporting environmental awareness and conservation for some years now, the upcycling approach became the tool of their latest product creations, as the brand ventured on using used and discarded rubber tires to produce trendy footwear.

Tribu Upcycled sandals (for both men & women) come in various designs and colors fit for outgoing and adventurous fashionistas. Apart from guaranteed craftsmanship and quality, the brand offers nothing but comfort, durability and functionality.

And while each pair of sandals is carefully handmade, the added-value to it is that disposed rubber tires were saved for re-use, thus, the reduction in tire dumping practices, and decrease in the consumption of fresh raw materials in developing new footwear. Therefore, no fuel-powered industrial equipment was involved in the production stage hence, the absence of greenhouse gas emission.
